About us

La Conocchia is a non-profit association from Positano, on the Amalfi Coast. We look after the mountains above the town: the paths, the woods, the dry-stone terraces and the people who still walk them.

How the association was born

It began when the path of Giovanni Fusco, who has known and walked these mountains for more than twenty years, crossed that of a group of friends who liked going up for the day. Years later those outings had turned into real treks, and the reason for climbing had changed: to the simple wish for a day out we had added a love for this world of rock and woods, paths and valleys, views and clouds.

That love made us want to protect our mountains, hurt as they are by fires and by careless behaviour. To do it we need the whole community, which is why we want to take you up there too: to see what we see, and fall in love with it.

Why “La Conocchia”

The Croce della Conocchia is the peak that stands above Positano. From up there you take in the whole last ridge of the Monti Lattari, which with one short jump reaches Capri. The beauty of that mountain is in every inch of it, and you feel it all the way up.

Our very first outing, many years ago, was to that summit. After hours of walking we sat down on a piece of rock in the sun and simply stayed there, breathing. Over the years fires, careless walkers and a lack of care have taken away some of the magic we found that day. What better name, then, than the mountain we love: the one that welcomes and protects us, and can be merciless if you do not respect it.
